Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease characterized by respiratory tract obstruction, generally progressive and associated with abnormal lung inflammation response to harmful particles or gases (WHO, 2016). The prevalence of COPD in Indonesia in 2018 was 2.4% of other diseases (Riskesdas, 2018). The prevalence of COPD morbidity and mortality has increased over time. There are 600 million people worldwide suffering from COPD, with 65 million suffering from moderate to severe COPD. It is estimated that by 2020, the third leading cause of death will be COPD after coronary heart disease and stroke (World Health Organization, 2015). Objective: To implement "diaphragmatic breathing exercise therapy to reduce shortness of breath in COPD patients," and to identify breathing patterns and oxygen saturation before and after diaphragmatic breathing exercise therapy. Method: This case study is based on Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to explore the management of Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise therapy for breathless COPD patients. Data presentation is adjusted for descriptive case study because the data is presented in narrative and tabular form. Results: Respiratory rate (RR) and SPO2 in the first study subject showed a decrease on day 1 with RR 28x/min and SPO2 87%, becoming RR 24x/min and SPO2 98% on day 3. Then, respiratory rate (RR) and SPO2 in the second study subject showed a decrease on day 1 with RR 26x/min and SPO2 92%, becoming RR 22x/min and SPO2 99% on day 3.
