Abstract

Emesis gravidarum, also known as morning sickness, is a condition involving nausea, vomiting, and dizziness during the first trimester of pregnancy (0-12 weeks). Although it is called morning sickness, emesis can occur at any time of the day. The management of emesis gravidarum is divided into pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods. One effective non-pharmacological method is the use of ginger and mint tea. Ginger and mint contain active ingredients that are beneficial for alleviating emesis and various other medical conditions. This study uses a case study method based on Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to explore the management of emesis gravidarum in first-trimester pregnant women. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of ginger and mint tea in managing emesis gravidarum. This case study was conducted by administering ginger and mint tea to respondents for 7 days. Evaluation was performed using an emesis scale measured by the PUQE (Pregnancy Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea) questionnaire. Before the implementation, the first respondent experienced emesis 6 times a day with a PUQE score of 10. After implementation, the frequency of emesis decreased to 1-2 times a day with a PUQE score of 4. The second respondent experienced emesis 7 times a day with a PUQE score of 11, and after the implementation, the frequency of emesis decreased to 2-3 times a day with a PUQE score of 4. Ginger contains essential oils, zingiberene, zingiberol, bisabolene, curcumin, gingerol, landrene, vitamin A, and bitter resin, which provide a soothing effect on the stomach to alleviate nausea and vomiting. Mint leaves contain essential oils like menthol, which help improve digestion and relieve stomach cramps with a mild anesthetic effect. The administration of ginger and mint tea to first-trimester pregnant women can help reduce the frequency of emesis gravidarum.
