Abstract
The increasing elderly population is a significant global
phenomenon, with the number of elderly people worldwide projected to rise from 703 million in 2019 to 1.5 billion by 2050. In Indonesia, the percentage of elderly individuals also increased, reaching 9.6% in 2019. This demographic shift presents challenges related to the physical, mental, and social health of the elderly, including degenerative processes that can reduce bodily functions and psychological wellbeing. However, the concept of "Successful Aging" offers a positive perspective where the elderly can enjoy a healthy, independent, and socially active old age. Independence plays a crucial role in successful aging, as independent elderly individuals tend to be physically and mentally healthier and have a higher quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of independence and Successful Aging in the elderly at the Cepiring Social Service Home for the Elderly. The study uses a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The research population consists of all elderly residents at the Cepiring Social Service Home for the Elderly, totaling 101 people, with a sample of 81 respondents selected using random sampling techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the Kendall Tau correlation test. There is a significant and moderately strong relationship between the level of independence and Successful Aging in the elderly at the Cepiring Social Service Home for the Elderly, as indicated by the Kendall Tau test with a significance value of 0.00 < 0.05 and a correlation coefficient of 0.312. This study shows that the level of independence has a significant and moderately strong relationship with Successful Aging in the elderly. Indicators that contribute to the independence of the elderly include physical quality, activities, psychological factors, social factors, religiosity, and having control over their lives.
