Abstract

Elderly individuals are those who have reached the age of 60 years. Hypertension, often referred to as high blood pressure, is a condition where blood pressure is <140/90 mmHg. Hypertension is a chronic disease that increases the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and even death. Hypertension is a significant health problem for society because it often causes no symptoms and can silently lead to fatal outcomes; hence it is called the silent killer disease. This case study aims to determine the benefits of progressive muscle relaxation therapy in lowering blood pressure among elderly hypertensive individuals at PPSLU Cepiring. The study employed an exploratory method involving 2 respondents observed over 3 days, with sessions conducted in the morning for 15 minutes each day. Progressive muscle relaxation was found to lower blood pressure in 2 respondents at PPSLU Cepiring. Their blood pressure decreased by 5-10 mmHg. From this conducted research, it is concluded that progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension. Progressive muscle relaxation lowers blood pressure through vasodilation and increased parasympathetic nervous system activity. It relaxes the mind and body, returning them from a tense state to a relaxed, normal, and controlled condition.
